George Skipworth

Composer

Welcome to the composition list of Dr. George Skipworth - symphonic and operatic conductor, concert pianist, concert and operatic bass-baritone, and lifelong composer. The concert works are progressive in nature, in contrast to a host of neo-traditional works composed for specific collegiate and volunteer organizations. Alongside modern concert works, Skipworth enjoys composing church anthems in various denominational styles by request. Many of them are listed here, from Southern Baptist to High Anglican.

Song cycles such as The Chicago Songs for bass or baritone voice reflect Carl Sandburg's love of his "Valhalla" city. The Eight Emily Dickinson Songs, premiered at Syracuse University, were included in the International Emily Dickinson Society catalogue of Recorded Settings. Four Irish Songs for Soprano & Orchestra made its debut at the Dublin International Symphonic Festival. Intimations of Immortality for large chorus and orchestra was premiered by the Volgograd Symphony & Chorus. A ballet, Catarina de Pazzi was performed in Arezzo in tableaux with early Italian poetry readings. The full ballet was premiered at Whitman College of Washington state with original choreographer Ida Lee Hutson Fish. The Requiem Mass was premiered at two Baltimore venues on successive nights, and Solemn Processional & Te Deum was performed at the St. George's Choral Festival of Memphis, alongside the American premiere of Intimations. Isis: Prayer to the Goddess was first performed at the Aegean Verdi Festival. The symphonic poem Stalingrad was premiered in Los Angeles with the UCLA Philharmonia. Eight Songs on Poems of Emily Dickinson were first heard at Syracuse University, and The Chicago Songs were first performed in Los Angeles. Skipworth has composed three one-act operas entitled Three Roads to Waitsburg, and the Trio from Roxane de Bergerac was introduced at the Charleston Heights Arts Center in southern Nevada

Numerous other offerings for all voice types round out the list, and a project is underway to compose Twenty-Four Short Forms & Fugues in sequential keys for Two Pianos or Four-Hands.
